10-year anniversary message

May 5, 2016

With over 20 years in the industry and 10 years at Fusion, it is my pleasure to be sharing this 10-year anniversary message with you.

I established Fusion in 2006 with the goal of providing businesses with a unique new option for creating complete business interiors and workplace solutions. At the time, there were just six of us in the office, doing it all from sales, to project and construction management, through to project accounting and payroll..

Over the last 10 years, Fusion has had the privilege of managing some of Vancouver’s most prestigious and unique projects, with an assorted mix of challenges and opportunities. In our inaugural year of business, we completed 28 projects and have now, to date, completed over 450 projects for over 280 distinct clients, and have 40 full-time team members. Our experience in office tenant improvements has allowed us to develop Fusion into Vancouver’s premier construction and project management team in the Design Build sector.

We have been able to improve our customers’ worlds’ one interior space at a time while consistently delivering a great experience. We have been involved in numerous exciting projects, some of which include:

  • 638 Smithe Street: In 2013 Fusion undertook the project of renovating the heritage building located at 638 Smithe Street. The building was originally built in 1925 as the home of Vancouver Motors, a Ford dealership. The heritage structure had the automotive dealership on the main level with the repair and parking garages on the upper two floors. Over the years, several consultants had looked at how to convert the upper floors to office space but hadn’t been successful. Fusion assessed the project and reached out to several of their existing clients who had done similar complex projects. The first step was to find the right consulting team to put this project in to action. Fusion was able to work with the City of Vancouver to understand the heritage building specifications and requirements and then put together a project strategy to convert the upper two levels into 30,000 square feet of class-A office space while ensuring the main level tenant’s retail operation could continue during construction. The project involved a complete envelope restoration including a new lobby entrance on Smithe Street, all-new windows built to match the original heritage windows, a new roof and full restoration of the exterior surfaces including the pilasters. Inside, additions included a state-of-the-art elevator, brand new lighting and electrical systems to meet the all-new ASHRAE standards and a high efficiency mechanical system. New common areas were added including storage areas, new washrooms, showers and bike storage facilities. This complex project was completed in 2015 and ultimately won the 2015 City of Vancouver Heritage Award.
  • Hootsuite Head Office: Hootsuite is a social media management system for businesses and organizations to collaboratively execute campaigns across social networks from one secure, web-based dashboard. After outgrowing their 14,000 sqft. Railtown office, Hootsuite struck a deal with the City of Vancouver and got to work on renovating 33,000 sqft. In conjunction with SSDG Interiors the Fusion team along with Hootsuite worked with the City of Vancouver, the inspectors and code consultants to fast track the design and approval process, clearing out at least 15 trailers of old walls ceilings and infrastructure. The end result reflects the personality of the company, which is a dog-friendly, open concept space that includes a 24-hour gym, yoga studio, log benches, pup tents for meeting spaces and picnic tables.
  • Sony Pictures Imageworks: As a long term client of Fusion Projects, Sony’s success in this market has led to multiple projects with Fusion. Fusion, along with Colliers, assisted Sony’s Global Real Estate team in analyzing several potential expansion sites. Once Sony decided that Cadillac Fairview’s newly remodelled 725 Granville Street would be their new head office, Fusion reviewed the site conditions, landlord requirements and developed a strategy to meet the tight four-month timeline to build out Sony’s space while the base building was still under construction. During the design of this new location, Sony’s space requirements increased by 50% without changing the required completion date! Fusion led the overall management of the project, including RFP for design services, tight cost controls, IT and logistics, ultimately getting Sony in on time and on budget! The new home for Sony was designed by DIALOG and includes 13 cinemas. The space is a tremendous showcase for Sony Pictures Entertainment and Imageworks success over the years. The studio has multiple staff areas and truly reflects the company’s personality helping Sony to attract and retain the top talent as well as clients from all over the world. Fusion is so excited to be a partner of SPE Imageworks and wishes them all the best with their continued success!

This is a special time in Fusion’s history, and one that I’m very proud of, as we celebrate our 10th anniversary. We began our journey in January 2006, and have spent the past decade working hard to build the Fusion brand by doing things the “Fusion Way”, with the commitment to consistently provide our clients with our unique vision, dedicated customer service and innovative thinking.

Moving forward, we remain determined to continue building on the strengths of our past, while further growing Fusion’s brand and reputation. We continue to stay focused on having Fusion’s brand recognized as the industry leader and having firm foundations in the “We are all Responsible” philosophy.

On behalf of Fusion and the team, I am exceptionally proud of our accomplishments over the last ten years, and I am excited about our journey ahead.
